STRATEGIC SESSION TO RECONCEPTUALIZE
HOW WE COMMUNICATE THE BLUE ECONOMY

RECONNECTING SOCIETY WITH THE SEA

The blue economy is generating a huge diversity of projects, knowledge, innovation, professions, and opportunities related to the Sea. However, much of this reality remains unknown to the general public.

Innovation and technology, research and scientific dissemination, ports, fishing, boating, shipbuilding and refitting, biotechnology, marine energies, tourism, culture and maritime heritage, navigation, water sports, or ecosystem conservation are very different realities that share the same space: the Sea.

The challenge is how we can explain all this complexity and convey it to a society where audiences are increasingly fragmented and traditional media coexist with social networks, digital platforms, podcasts, streaming, content creators, and new communities.

This Systemic Change Workshop driven by A Bordo Lab aims to put these two ecosystems in dialogue —blue economy and media— and collectively explore how we can build new ways to explain, share, and bring the Sea closer to all of society.

It's not just about communicating more about the blue economy.

It's about rethinking what we explain, who explains it, how we explain it, in what formats, through which channels, and to which communities we want to reach.

A SYSTEMIC APPROACH TO COMMUNICATION

Many of the stories of the blue economy continue to circulate within their own ecosystems: science speaks to science, innovation to innovation, boating to boating, or environmental conservation to its own communities.

During the day, we would like to explore how we can break these bubbles and generate new connections between content, narratives, formats, channels, audiences, and communities.

We are interested in bringing to the table the human stories behind The Sea; scientific dissemination; innovation projects; current and future professions; maritime culture and heritage; navigation and water sports; environmental preservation; and the possibilities offered by the hybridization between journalism, entertainment, technology, education, culture, and new digital formats.

We do not start from a predetermined answer. We want to create the space for the conversation to emerge new questions, connections, narratives, and possibilities that we may not yet be seeing today.

WHO IS IT FOR?

The session will bring together profiles that usually do not share the same workspace:

  • General and specialized media.
  • Journalists and communication professionals.
  • Audiovisual producers and content creators.
  • Digital platforms and new media.
  • Storytelling, design, and digital narrative professionals.
  • Scientists, research centers, and communicators.
  • Universities and knowledge centers.
  • Innovation projects and blue economy startups.
  • Companies from different subsectors of the blue economy.
  • Ports and public administrations.
  • Professionals in culture and maritime heritage.
  • Entities linked to the conservation and regeneration of marine ecosystems.
  • Organizations related to navigation and water sports.
  • Communities and citizen initiatives linked to The Sea.

METHODOLOGY · FISHBOWL

The session will be developed through a Fishbowl, a co-creation methodology that allows for an open and dynamic conversation incorporating the different sensitivities, knowledge, and realities of all participants.

Unlike a conventional panel, the Fishbowl allows people to enter and exit the conversation, and the different perspectives transform the debate as the session progresses.

It is one of the co-creation methodologies that Bordo Lab uses to activate collective intelligence, connect diverse actors, and bring forth challenges and opportunities from the very ecosystem.

Because there is not a single blue economy, a single audience, a single narrative, or a single channel to explain it.

CREATION OF A STEERING GROUP

The workshop aims to be the starting point of a broader work process.

Based on the participating individuals and the issues that arise during the day, a Blue Economy & Media driving group will be created to continue exploring what this new model of advanced communication could be and to start connecting actors, knowledge, media, content, and possible experimentation spaces.

This process will be integrated into QUARK, the blue innovation operating system being developed by A Bordo Lab, where Advanced Communication is proposed as an essential pillar and, at the same time, a transversal layer capable of continuously and regularly connecting innovation, knowledge, communities, and society.

PRESENTATION AT THE BARCELONA BOAT SHOW (TO BE CONFIRMED)

The process will have its first public milestone at the Barcelona Boat Show (to be confirmed) or at another industry event where the work initiated during the workshop and the evolution of the driving group will be presented.

It will be an opportunity to share the main issues and opportunities that have emerged, incorporate new actors, and continue collectively building this new way of communicating the blue economy.

Because the challenge is not just to get more people talking about the blue economy.

The challenge is to ensure that the stories of innovation, science, professions, culture, and, above all, the stories of the diverse people connected to the Sea reach all of society; awaken curiosity, generate awareness, and open a door to discover a whole world that is still invisible to many. Making the blue economy visible is also about creating a new connection with the Sea, understanding all that it brings us, and fostering a culture of respect, care, and shared responsibility towards its future.
